(2, Samidh@MIT) So, I call this meeting of the Chapter of Councils to Order
(2, Samidh@MIT) Thanks everyone for coming!
(2, Samidh@MIT) First, I want to explain to you why we're even having
this meeting
(2, Samidh@MIT) Basically, I thought the SEDS chapters have been separate
(2, Samidh@MIT) for long enough, and it's time to meet each other
(13, Chris@UAH) I agree
(2, Samidh@MIT) So, I'd like everyone to introduce themselves
(2, Samidh@MIT) In order of your line number
(2, Samidh@MIT) Just say your name, your school, and anything else you want
(2, Samidh@MIT) maybe a bit about your chapter
(2, Samidh@MIT) I guess I'm first at #2
(2, Samidh@MIT) Well I'm Samidh Chakrabarti and I'm the one who sends
you all of
(2, Samidh@MIT) the annoying emails
(2, Samidh@MIT) I'm also the President of MITSEDS, and I send them annoying
(2, Samidh@MIT) email too
(2, Samidh@MIT) We have probably ~80 core members here
(2, Samidh@MIT) and about 400 who come to the lecture series off an on
(2, Samidh@MIT) Our big project this year is building a radio telescope
(2, Samidh@MIT) We're about a month or so from finishing
(2, Samidh@MIT) That's it.
(2, Samidh@MIT) Loren, the floor is yours!
(4, Loren at Caltech") Yeah!
(4, Loren at Caltech") Well, as you can tell, I'm the pres of Caltechy SEDS
(4, Loren at Caltech") And spelling is not a prerequisite
(4, Loren at Caltech") for being president.
(4, Loren at Caltech") Our big projects this year...
~Note: My telnet session got messed up, so I logged in again.
~Note: That explains the change in style.
(4) Loren at Caltech" says, "(grinding the m,irror)"
(4) Loren at Caltech" says, ",trying to build a railgun,"
(4) Loren at Caltech" says, "and rejuvenating an old donated CCD."

(5) Cherish@NDSU says, "Okay...I guess I'm 5."
(5) Cherish@NDSU says, "Lessee, I'm not the president of NDSU SEDS,
but he couldn't make it"
(5) Cherish@NDSU says, " so he asked me to sit in on his behalf."
(5) Cherish@NDSU says, "We're a very recent chapter and still getting
on our feet."
(5) Cherish@NDSU says, "We have a fairly small membership, but a lot

(4) Loren at Caltech" says, "Sorry to interupt, but NDSU?"
(5) Cherish@NDSU says, "North Dakota State University."
(4) Loren at Caltech" says, "Thanks :)"
(5) Cherish@NDSU says, "almost in Canada. ;-)"
(5) Cherish@NDSU says, "Other than that, it might be useful for y'all
to know that"
(5) Cherish@NDSU says, "I'm the SEDS USA Director of
Publications...just for future reference."
(5) Cherish@NDSU says, "And I think that's about it."

(7) phillip@OU says, "that's about it...."
(8) Joe Stecher says, "I'm Joe Stecher, at the University of
Maryland, im VP of our chapter. heh we used to be big, now were
small, but were still around. Coincidentally, we are also working on
a radio telescope."
(8) Joe Stecher says, "heh, we dont have any other projects really"
(2) Samidh@MIT says, "we should hook are tele's together and make an
interferometer :-)"
(8) Joe Stecher says, "since we only have about 4 regular members and
50 or so on our mailing list"
(4) Loren at Caltech" says, "Remind me to bring up a possible survey
project between the chapoters..."
(8) Joe Stecher says, "we were actually discussing making an
interferometer with other amateurs"
(8) Joe Stecher says, "but we want to get the darn thing built first"
(8) Joe Stecher says, "then worry about other projects"
(8) Joe Stecher says, "our plan calls for using it for seti
operations in the water hole"

one over to Yuki later. He knows a little bit about OASIS."
(9) Marty Farrell says, "lets see, we're attempting to build a
railgun, which we call an Electro Magnetic Propulsion device so we
don't get in trouble with the school administration."
(4) Loren at Caltech" says, "(In case you haven't figured out, my
delete key sdoesn't work :)."
(9) Marty Farrell says, "that project has been taking a long time though"
(4) Loren at Caltech" says, "Ah, other rail-gun attempts."
(4) Loren at Caltech" says, "We should mark each other's progress,
share ideas,..."

(9) Marty Farrell says, "off the presses is our survey which we will
distribute to the 1300+ student body."
(9) Marty Farrell says, "that'll be fun."
(9) Marty Farrell says, "and, one of the things that we have actually
done as a large group was watch the supposed landing of the Mars
Polar Lander."
(9) Marty Farrell says, "we have NASA TV at school, so, we sat and
watched nothing for 2 hours."
(2) Samidh@MIT says, "same here"
(9) Marty Farrell says, "other than that, one of our members parents

ideas are being investigated for good projects"
(12) Kathleen@stanford says, "In the past year, the chapter has
worked some with the Mars Society chapter in Palo Alto"

(15) Harvard says, "Hi, I'm Adam Ros \"

about 160 onour mailing list"

fiactor, its hard to get people enthused about anything"
(15) Harvard says, "indeed, wecan getpeople excited, but cannot
garner time from them. "
(12) Kathleen@stanford says, "i guess we just need to keep trying:-)"
(15) Harvard says, "only with incentives can we get people."
(15) Harvard says, "that is why wesend people to conferences"
(13) Chris@UAH says, "we have to do free pizza to get good turnout :-)"
(15) Harvard says, "the bait does the trick..."
(6) Katie says, "same here"
(8) Joe Stecher says, "yeah but not easy to get money for pizza"
(12) Kathleen@stanford says, "yep"
(15) Harvard says, "the one issue though was funds"
(4) Loren" says, "We get an awful lot of funds from local companies,"
(4) Loren" says, "like Allied Signal ..."
(13) Chris@UAH says, "almost everything on SEDSat was donation"
(15) Harvard says, "really? how did you getthat?"
(8) Joe Stecher says, "we have a competing society, astroterps, that
kinda sucks away memebers and funds"
(15) Harvard says, "areyou tax deductible?"
(13) Chris@UAH says, "we also got all but food in our Colorado trip funded"
(13) Chris@UAH says, "yeah we are"
(4) Loren" says, "They actually have annuak caklls for proposals..."
(2) Samidh@MIT says, "May I make a special request?"
(13) Chris@UAH says, "tax deductible I mean"
(4) Loren" says, "yeah, all the SEDS chapters are tax deductible"
(4) Loren" says, "this came up with us recently..."
(2) Samidh@MIT says, "Can we move the discussion a little later."
(4) Loren" says, "Sure :)."
(15) Harvard says, "hmmm..sure. sorry."
(2) Samidh@MIT says, "I have a few important announcements to get
trhgouh first"
(2) Samidh@MIT says, "no, the discussion is GREAT!"
(2) Samidh@MIT says, "but i just want to make sure we get through
some important stuff"
(2) Samidh@MIT says, "Now that we've all been introduced..."
(2) Samidh@MIT says, "Just so you guys know, we have 17 SEDS-USA
chapters at the moement"
(2) Samidh@MIT says, "The ones that either couldn't make the meeting"
(2) Samidh@MIT says, "or are having technical difficulties"
(2) Samidh@MIT says, "are: Florida Institute of Technology"
(2) Samidh@MIT says, "University of Virginia"

(2) Samidh@MIT says, "Cornell University"
(2) Samidh@MIT says, "Purdue U."
(2) Samidh@MIT says, "San Francisco State University"
(2) Samidh@MIT says, "and University of Michigan"
(2) Samidh@MIT says, "Not as big as SEDS used to be, but still very
respectable"
(2) Samidh@MIT says, "The first thing I need to find out is this:"
(2) Samidh@MIT says, "Have you received the recertification package? (Y/N)"
(4) Loren" says, "Y"
(12) Kathleen@stanford says, "N"
(13) Chris@UAH says, "yup, and sent the charter back to you..."
(6) Katie says, "yes and is being sen"
(8) Joe Stecher says, "yes, i believe so"
(9) Marty Farrell says, "Yes and i have a question about it"
(4) Loren" says, "and was mailed 2 days ago"
(7) phillip@OU says, "y... will mail tomorrow"
(5) Cherish@NDSU says, "yes"
(15) Harvard says, "Y"
(2) Samidh@MIT says, "so that is everyone but Stanford"
(2) Samidh@MIT says, "Ok, I'll talk with you about it later Kathleen"
(12) Kathleen@stanford says, "thanks"
(2) Samidh@MIT says, "I just wanted to make sure because"
(2) Samidh@MIT says, "I tried mailing out something to defunct seds chapters"
(2) Samidh@MIT says, "last month. But the glue stick I used was really old"
(2) Samidh@MIT says, "so 1/2 of the labels fell off"
(2) Samidh@MIT says, "and were returned to me"
(7) phillip@OU says, ";)"
(2) Samidh@MIT says, "It was heartbreaking ;-)"
(2) Samidh@MIT says, "I'll print real labels from now on"
(2) Samidh@MIT says, "Next thing: I just wanted to remind you guys to
send in the"
(2) Samidh@MIT says, "acceptance form"
(2) Samidh@MIT says, "Who had a question about the package?"
(9) Marty Farrell says, "ME"
(2) Samidh@MIT says, "I guess this is the best time to ask"
(9) Marty Farrell says, "I was wondering if my chapter could be
exempt from the 25$ deal. being that we high shcool s students are
flying the hoover flags high"
(2) Samidh@MIT says, "Yes, I'm getting to that"
(2) Samidh@MIT says, "I'm going to propose to the Board that"
(2) Samidh@MIT says, "ALL chapters be exempt from dues this year"
(9) Marty Farrell says, "oh."
(5) Cherish@NDSU says, "Your reasoning being...?"
(2) Samidh@MIT says, "I see this as a regrouping year"
(2) Samidh@MIT says, "Technically dues were due last fall"
(9) Marty Farrell says, "so i can just send that in without the check
and all is good?"
(13) Chris@UAH says, "does that mean we get our dues back? :-)"
(2) Samidh@MIT says, "I don't want to discourage any chapters from
re-registering"
(2) Samidh@MIT says, "just because they don't want to pay dues this year"
(2) Samidh@MIT says, "Chris, I haven't seen your check, but I suppose
we can apply it to"
(2) Samidh@MIT says, "next year"
(5) Cherish@NDSU says, "And considering we'd be asking for dues again
in a few months..."
(2) Samidh@MIT says, "But again, this is just my idea and not final yet"
(2) Samidh@MIT says, "I understand that high school chapters have trouble"
(2) Samidh@MIT says, "coming up with the money"
(9) Marty Farrell says, "Ok. thats my main concern."
(6) Katie says, "shop should we sent in our dues then"
(6) Katie says, "imean send"
(2) Samidh@MIT says, "So we may be able to "
(2) Samidh@MIT says, "arrange a reduced rate"
(2) Samidh@MIT says, "I'll propose it to the Board....."
(8) Joe Stecher says, "heh gotta get up early tomorrow"
(8) Joe Stecher says, "bye all"
(9) Marty Farrell says, "ok. u can go on to the next question"
(2) Samidh@MIT says, "Does that answer your question, marty?"
(2) Samidh@MIT says, "good"
(2) Samidh@MIT says, "At this point, you don't have to send in your dues"
(2) Samidh@MIT says, "Any other questions about the recert package?"
(13) Chris@UAH says, "none here"
(9) Marty Farrell says, "nada"
(6) Katie says, "none"
(2) Samidh@MIT says, "ok then"
(2) Samidh@MIT says, "The next announcement:"
(2) Samidh@MIT says, "As you probably read in your email this morning"
(2) Samidh@MIT says, "Erin resigned as Chair"
(2) Samidh@MIT says, "so that means that I'm the Chair now"
(2) Samidh@MIT says, "but that ALSO means that we have a whole bunch
of EMPTY positions"
(2) Samidh@MIT says, "on the board"
(2) Samidh@MIT says, "In fact, Cherish, Audrey, and I are the only
people on the board"
(5) Cherish@NDSU says, "What happened to the guy from SFSU?"
(2) Samidh@MIT says, "He's just the acting director"
(12) Kathleen@stanford says, "samantha?"
(2) Samidh@MIT says, "since he was never actually elected"
(2) Samidh@MIT says, "Samantha resigned several months ago"
(2) Samidh@MIT says, "Basically it's kind of pointless to hold
special elections now"
(2) Samidh@MIT says, "since the real elections are just a couple months away"
(2) Samidh@MIT says, "However, I'd like to appoint as many people as possible"
(2) Samidh@MIT says, "to be "acting directors""
(2) Samidh@MIT says, "It means you're a part of the board, but you don't have"
(2) Samidh@MIT says, "an official vote on the baord."
(2) Samidh@MIT says, "You might wonder why you'd want such a job"
(2) Samidh@MIT says, "I think if you're an acting director, it really
increases"
(2) Samidh@MIT says, "the chances of you being elected to that
position for next year"
(9) Marty Farrell says, "well hell, judging bythe National ByLaws
section 1, i guess i could go for Drector of High SChool Affiars"
(2) Samidh@MIT says, "So, if any of you are interested, let me know now!"
(15) Harvard says, "what are the duties?"
(2) Samidh@MIT says, "You'll get first crack at it!"
(2) Samidh@MIT says, "The detailed list of duties is in the bylaws"
(6) Katie says, "how long will the term be for"
(2) Samidh@MIT says, "http://www.seds.org/seds/constitution/bylaws.html"
(2) Samidh@MIT says, "So you're appointment will last through May."
(2) Samidh@MIT says, "But if you're then elected, it'll last through next year"
(2) Samidh@MIT says, "It is particularly important that we have a director"
(2) Samidh@MIT says, "of expansion and chapter affairs too"
(2) Samidh@MIT says, "You'd be shocked by the number of requests we
get to start"
(2) Samidh@MIT says, "new chapters!"
(2) Samidh@MIT says, "The open positions are:"
(6) Katie says, "can you still be part of the board if you are no
longr in school. aka, graduating in dec"
(5) Cherish@NDSU says, "I think you can..."
(2) Samidh@MIT says, "Vice-Chair, Dir of Chapter Affairs, Dir of Expansion, "
(2) Samidh@MIT says, "Dir of H.S. Affairs"
(5) Cherish@NDSU says, "If I remember correctly, you're allowed a 1
yr leave of absence sort of thing...I think"
(2) Samidh@MIT says, "and Dir of Special Projects"
(2) Samidh@MIT says, "I don't know the answer off the top of my head"
(2) Samidh@MIT says, "I'll get back to you...."
(2) Samidh@MIT says, "Anyway, read over the descriptions and let me know"
(2) Samidh@MIT says, "if you want a position"
(6) Katie says, "thanks anyway i would like to consider the dir of expansion."
(2) Samidh@MIT says, "We could really use your help"
(2) Samidh@MIT says, "Send me an email if you want a position"
(2) Samidh@MIT says, "The next thing I want to talk about is interchapter comm"
(6) Katie says, "bye fot now"
(2) Samidh@MIT says, "I'm still working on the new website"
(2) Samidh@MIT says, "It takes a long time.... :-)"
(2) Samidh@MIT says, "But my goal is to finish it by March"
(2) Samidh@MIT says, "Next thing: I highly recommend that all of you
join seds-discuss"
(2) Samidh@MIT says, "I've sent out 3 emails or so about it...."
(2) Samidh@MIT says, "So I won't say anymore about it"
(2) Samidh@MIT says, "Next thing: Cherish has an announcement about the NOVA"
(2) Samidh@MIT says, "For those of you who don't know, the NOVA is
the SEDS-USA"
(2) Samidh@MIT says, "newsletter"
(2) Samidh@MIT says, "We'd really appreciate it if each chapter could
write a couple of"
(2) Samidh@MIT says, "paragraphs introducing themselves for the next NOVA"
(5) Cherish@NDSU says, "And pictures if possible. :-)"
(7) phillip@OU says, "by when"
(2) Samidh@MIT says, "Cherish, you want to give them the details?"
