The Kvant-2 ("Quantum-2") module joined Mir in 1989. Originally developed as a logistical transport spacecraft for the Soviet Union's Almaz military space station program, Kvant-2 includes scientific equipment, life support equipment, and an EVA airlock.
Kvant-2's scientific payload includes biological research and Earth observation experiments. It also contains drinking water, oxygen generation, and other life support equipment, as well as shower and washing facilities. An airlock is used for cosmonaut EVAs outside the space station. The airlock included a manned maneuvering unit similar to one tested on American shuttle flights in the 1980s; it was tested twice in February 1990 and never used again. Two solar panels are also attached to the exterior of the module.
