Manager 1 March 1999 ------------------------------------------------------------------------------ ANNOUNCEMENT OF OPPORTUNITY The Student Satellite Project (SSP) at the University of Arizona is looking for its next Project Manager for UASat. If you are interested, but not familiar with the SSP, please visit the homepage of SSP at . 1. Responsibilities & Rewards: SSP is a project of the students and by the students. The mentors provide the possibility and advice, but the students take the initiative and perform the tasks. The Project Manager is the leader of the entire project. The many responsibilities of the Project Manager include (may vary as SSP evolves): * Overseeing the day-to-day operations of the project including: - Facilitating communications between teams - Identifying relevant tasks and assigning responsibilites - Following progress of project and taking measures to ensure progress - Providing each team with adequate resources from total resources available to SSP - Identifying needs of teams and providing for those needs in a timely matter. * Chairing periodic meetings (currently weekly) of the leaders of the teams (currently seven) * Representing SSP at official functions, fundraising events, * Proposal writing assistance and review * Organizing design or programmatic reviews of the project * Work closely with the two Project Mentors These responsibilities are not without reward. In addition to the unique and invaluable experience that comes with the challenge and opportunity to lead a highly technical and large scale project, the Project Manager is the designated recipient of a NASA Space Grant Graduate Fellowship ($16,000 stipend, $8,500 tuition and fee waiver, $1500 travel stipend; portions split-funded from home department and/or faculty advisor). The fellowship begins in mid-August 1999. It is renewable for the second year depending on the performance review. A minimum $140/week (doubles in summer) stipend is expected for the Project-Manager Elect, prior to August 1999. 2. Qualifications: Qualified applicants must be a graduate student or admitted as a graduate student in the Graduate College at the Univeristy of Arizona, by Spring semester, 1999. The applicant must also have excellent organizational and management skills, the ability to work with students, staff, faculty, and outside professionals, and a desire to learn. A working knowledge of spacecraft design, engineering design, or similar disciplines is a bonus! 3. Based on the applications and the comments of the references, three finalists will be picked. After interviewing the finalists, the Selection Committee will declare the Project-Manager Elect on December 10, 1998. * Period of learning: The Project-Manager Elect assumes office immediately after election to work with the Project Manager. * Transfer of power: On March 1, 1999, the Project-Manager Elect takes over the duties of the Project Manager, while the outgoing Project Manager becomes Past Project Manager. The Past Project Manager will remain to assist the Project Manager while available, during which time a new Project-Manager Elect will be elected to realize the three-year forward-moving leadership.
