Minutes of the SSP TMs meeting on 4 September 1998 Place: PSA 569, SSP HQ The meeting began at 16:00. Present: W. Chen, E. Fasse, K. C. Hsieh, L. Schooley, H. Tharp, W. Wing Absent: J. D. Carothers, U. Fink, K. Thome After a brief self-introduction, the meeting went on to discuss the following items: 1. Schooley announced the availability of conference scholarships for two more students, in addition to Team Leaders Stephanie Zinn (DCH) and Dana Irve (TTC), to attend international conference on space telemetry on 26-29 October 1998 in San Diego. He hope the other teams would select the two students. The organization, with website , has a small grant to the ECE Department and is willing to give more if the University can provide matching funds. 2. Since SSP will rely heavily on in-kind support from the industries, e.g. Burr Brown provides SSP with items in their catalog, Wing suggested that there should be a policy for the handling of such support -- liquidity instead of strict barter -- and to have someone in charge of such activities. He volunteered to draft the guidelines for later discussion and eventual implementation. 3. Hsieh reported on the following items: a) Present status of requesting for the Hitchhiker launch manifest. NASA would require a "Safety Engineer" from SSP when integration begins. Whether this engineer could be a student will have to be explored. b) TMs from the CoEM should be on the lookout for a Co-Project Mentor to share the load with him. c) TMs should, from their mentoring define topics for Engineering Capstone Design Projects. d) A proposal from SSP to NSF's Curriculum & Course Development Program is due in November. This proposal should come from the Project Mentor and the TMs addressing the interdisciplinary and team-work of the courses related to SSP. He will provide more information to all TMs soon. e) Dean Peterson of CoEM has given SSP $6K with an emphasis on supporting CoEM faculty participation in SSP. Whether this is a one-time giving needs to be checked. 4. On the need of a Co-Project Mentor and the used of Dean Peterson's support, both pointing to the CoEM, all agreed that the TMs from the CoEM -- Carothers, Chen, Fasse, Schooley, and Tharp -- should work together with their respective heads and Dean Peterson. Hsieh expressed the preference of the Co-Project Mentor from CoEM to administer the funds from the CoEM, e.g. the present $6K. Tharp agreed to be the temporary leader and contact person to get the CoEM TMs organized to coordinate and gain more support from the CoEM. Hsieh will forward to Tharp the schedules he has received from the TMs so he could arrange for a meeting of the CoEM TMs. 5. All agreed that there is a need to meet regularly as SSP is moving towards Preliminary Design Review. The next meeting is scheduled for 15:00 on 18 September. Hsieh will check with those absent. The meeting adjourned about 17:15.
